Mission: Providing support for people who are making real and positive change in our world. Lending support and assistance to those who are enhancing our local and global communities via their leadership in offering either opportunities for education, providing access to healthcare, empowering the disadvantaged, creating environmental awareness or helping cultivate alternative media outlets. The foundation operates with an emphasis on locating and supporting grass roots organizations that are making a positive impact on the health and well being of our society, humanity and our planet.
Garden Club of Oak Park & River Forest is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization comprised of experts and novices who are committed to helping hobbyists learn about garden design, plant materials and culture for their own back yards. The Garden Club holds eight monthly meetings, the first Wednesday of the month at various venues in our community. In addition to our educational and social programs, we have hands on classes and field trips to become more successful and creative gardeners. Our primary mission is to spread understanding of horticulture throughout Oak Park and River Forest and to promote it as an important way to enrich and beautify our communities. No matter where you live, the Garden Club welcomes you as a special guest at our events.
Ever since our doors opened in 2004, Marion Street Cheese Market has been strongly focused on sustainability and local food issues. We have always been an American artisan-centric cheese shop with a mission of supporting small, local independent cheesemakers, family farmers, and food artisans. When deciding on what cheeses to offer, we have always felt that the closer to Oak Park the better, while still looking to offer artisan cheese from domestic cheesemakers who were farmstead in operation and practiced sustainable farming and cheesemaking practices, wherever they may be – around the United States or around the globe. With the build-out and opening of our expanded Market (July 2008) to include a Bistro and Bar, we continued our green focus, not only with all of the food products and beverages we source and provide, but throughout our construction, furnishings, and daily operations.
WebTrax Studio is committed to bringing positive change to our communities and to our planet. We are generous with our support for social change and arts groups. There are several organizations whose missions we deeply believe in, and we often work on their projects pro bono. We train young media workers who are eager to expand their portfolios by working on low budget and pro-bono jobs.
Greenline Wheels works to reinforce the values of the Oak Park River Forest community and contribute to its vibrancy by renting bikes and accessories, engaging with community partners of all types to support local commerce and tourism, promoting and expanding bike safety education, and promoting a more bicycle friendly community.

Sustainability has been a part of the fabric of Dominican University since its founding, and it will continue to move the university forward. Caring for the Earth’s resources and people throughout the world is part of Dominican’s mission statement to “participate in the creation of a more just and humane world.” Students, faculty and staff are involved in sustainability when they recycle, ride their bike to work, reuse items and conserve resources. The university has taken larger steps to reduce its carbon footprint, conserve water and energy, and educate students on ecology and sustainability.
In the spring of 2011, the university launched 4Rfuture: A Sustainability Plan for Dominican University. If you would like more information or have an idea about a way to help, please contact Elena Maans, the sustainability coordinator, at emaans@dom.edu or (708) 524-6897.
Environmental Stewardship Group: This group meets every month to plan educational and worship activities that focus on protecting the earth’s natural resources. We feature a monthly column in the newsletter called “Green Space” to provide tips for the congregation. There is a Gardening and God class that is taught by church member and botanist Paul Aeschleman. The class explores sustainable gardening, ecology and the spirituality of creation. The class is seasonal and experimental and takes seasonal bike tours of members’ gardens. For more information, contact Laurie Bunkers lbunks@comcast.net or Paul Aeschleman aeschlemanp@sbcglobal.net.
