From Oak Park Public Library:

Join us as Cody Norman, a local artist and designer who uses an industrial robot and custom tools to turn recycled plastic into functional art pieces inspired by nature (and whose sculpture pictured you have probably walked by right in downtown Oak Park!), dives into his creative process and discusses how he promotes environmental awareness through a unique approach to art. Q&A will follow the presentation. Once registered, you will receive an email of optional recyclable items to bring along for Cody to turn into future art.

About the artist
Cody Norman is a Chicago-based artist, designer, and educator. He currently serves as part-time faculty in the Sculpture and Designed Objects departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He graduated with a BFA from SAIC in 2016 and earned an MFA in 3D Design from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2020. Through a local network of households and small businesses, he collects post-consumer plastic to create work inspired by nature and sustainability. Norman’s process physically blurs the line between digital and hand craft creating works that resemble nature but have a chaotic and unpredictable materiality, challenging viewers to consider how the work is made.

People in Toledo, Ohio, vote to grant Lake Erie the right to exist while others in Grant Township, Pennsylvania, protect groundwater from industrial waste. They, along with Defend Oh:yo’ and Standing Rock, are joined in an international fight to protect more than just water. They fight for their community, democracy, and for Nature as a living entity unto itself. In the end, "Who will speak for Nature?"

This film won Best Documentary Feature from the Hollywood Verge Film Awards, Spotlight Documentary Film Awards’ Gold Award, 2021 Common Good International Film Festival Audience Award, and Accolade Global Film Competition Award of Excellence for Documentary.

Celebrate our 10th Birthday with us! See the 10 best films from the past 10 years of the One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest. Choose to attend in person at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 N. Since 2013, the One Earth Young Filmmakers Contest has awarded over 100 prizes to short environmental films from youth age 25 down to 3rd grade. Instead of taking action, they launched a campaign that has derailed the fight against climate change. A shocking investigation uncovers what these institutions have done to impede the battle against climate change. Companies fired scientists who spoke out, and public perception was purposely manipulated. As the scale and urgency of the climate crisis are becoming undeniably clear, the impact these actions may have had on the race to save the planet is more startling than ever.

Between the ages of 11 and 14, they are all directly affected by the consequences of environmental destruction. In the film, we see the global water crisis as it is playing out in Senegal. A visit to the girl from Indonesia highlights plastic waste pollution. A segment on the girl from India reveals the effects of the agricultural crisis. Finally, the Australian girl reveals the fatal destruction found within oceans and on land due to climate change.

Recommended for middle school+ general audiences.
